What is reindeer herding?

Reindeer herding in the Barents See Region is practiced in Northern Scandinavia and Russia mostly by nomadic indigenous peoples who move around with their reindeer herds from pasture to pasture.

Herding is practiced on different seasonal pastures. In the summer reindeer feed on grass, leaves, herbs and fungi building up fat to last through the poor grazing during winter, when they feeds largely on various lichens and shrubs.
